Once the basics of calligraphy are there, once you grasp the concepts of rhythm and spacing (letter-carpets), once you understand how the tools work, then you can start becoming a bit more creative and adventurous in your compositions.

Learning a few basic alphabets is helpful here too. You can combine foundational hand with italics, or a fraktur-like script. Using different tool, different colors, and a little bit of fantasy, the possibilities are never-ending.

After many hours of playing, take a look back at what you’ve done. You might be inspired to go back continue some compositions. Other will be pure garbage, and that’s ok. Every piece of paper has a purpose.
